World of working population changes and their implications under HRM
Introduction
Human resources are now in a state of dynamic evolvement, and as it
becomes increasingly strategic while maintaining its operational
responsibilities, it is under relentless pressure to negotiate a complicated
and challenging environment (CIPD, 2019).
Human resources are now up to date on the latest techniques and
technologies as it is essential for companies who hope to maintain their
competitive advantage in the twenty-first century (Nasir, 2017). Furthermore,
Human resource management (HRM) has undergone several of the most dramatic
transformations in the new century.
The role played by the HRM managers
The role of HR managers has evolved from merely dealing with personal
difficulties to planning and implementing complex organizational plans.
Accordingly, as per the statistics, the number of individuals who work more
than the considered range of work is increasing worldwide. According to World
Population Prospects 2019 (United Nations, 2019), by 2050, 1 in 6 people in the
world will be over the age of 65, up from 1 in 11 in 2019.
When specifically looking into the Sri Lankan aspect, beyond the
alterations brought about by covid-19, job automation has had a big impact on
how one does business which directly affects the human resources area of work
(International Labor Organization, 2020). It is a breakthrough that impacts not
just what human resources managers do but also how and where they show the
ability to systematize recurring activities.
Work-life balance of the working population
Human resource managers are in a unique position to help employees
adjust to the changing nature of work (University of Minnesota, 2016).
Furthermore, these statistics would include areas such as mortality risks,
general health conditions, nature and rate of operation, efficiency, and other
socio-economic factors as the employees grow older which can also be seen as
changing factors when compared to a decade ago. This has advantages as well as
adverse effects on the current world status. However, building a healthy work-life
balance is considered a crucial and vital area that HR managers are now fully
engaging in.
The five main areas are currently looked upon by the strategic HR
managers who actively tries to build this balance. Policies, benefits &
facilities, training, change management and Counselling are considered the five
main activity areas. An individual's experience is measured upon the efficiency
and years of work yet that might be a decrease due to time as one age (Mark,
1956). Simultaneously, assisting to balance the workloads and cultivating a
positive work environment for employees at work is now considered a growing
area under the HR division.
Conclusion
Due to the ongoing situations, many companies
are cutting down on their employees as they are facing financial issues.
However, they still maintain to provide or complete the same workload whereas
now it is divided among the few remaining employees. This has affected the
employees in an adverse spiral. However, it is important that the HR managers
assist these individuals to perform at their best during work while providing
support through building a positive work-life balance. This would ultimately
result in an increase in job satisfaction, a decrease in work stress, and an
increase in retention rate.
